How to make an IG website

Ten minutes, on your phone, free. Here is every step.

An IG website is the page behind the one link Instagram lets you put on your profile. This guide makes one from nothing, on a phone, without installing anything.

1. Claim your address

Sign up with your email address and pick a username. Your site will live at www.igwebsites.com/yourname, so choose the same handle you use on Instagram if it is free. You will get a sign-in link by email. There is no password to invent or forget.

2. Pick a look

You land on your site with a template already applied and four cards already written. Tap Look to change it. There are twelve, and each one carries a palette, a type pairing and a shape language together, so you are picking a mood rather than assembling a design.

If you have a brand colour, set it under Your own colour. Everything else on the page is rebuilt around it and checked for contrast, so you cannot produce a page nobody can read.

3. Write your cards

Each card is one screen of your site. You start with four:

  • Intro. Your photograph, your name, and one sentence about what you do. Keep it to a sentence. This is the card most people will see and not all of them will scroll.
  • What I do. The thing you want understood first.
  • Find me. Your links out. Instagram, a shop, a booking page, wherever else you are.
  • Keep in touch. An email sign-up form. This is the one that compounds, because an address is yours in a way a follower is not.

Add more with Add a card, and reorder them with the arrows. Anything you do not want yet, switch off rather than delete.

4. Add photographs

On any card, open Background and choose Photo. Over two hundred are built in and free to use commercially. Flick sideways through a collection and tap one.

Text on a photograph is placed on a dark wash automatically, so it stays readable whichever picture you choose. You do not have to think about contrast.

5. Publish, and put the link in your bio

Tap Publish. Then, in Instagram: your profile, Edit profile, the Links or Website field, Add external link, and paste your address. Save.

The exact taps move around between Instagram versions. There is a guide with the current ones here.

What to put on it, if you are stuck

The most common mistake is treating the page as a menu of everything. It is not a sitemap, it is one answer to one question: somebody just tapped your bio link, what did they want?

Usually it is one of four things. To buy something, to book something, to find out whether you do the thing they need, or to keep up with you. Put that first and let the rest follow it. There are worked examples by type of business here.

Questions

How long does it take to make an IG website?

About ten minutes for a first version. You start with four cards already filled in with suggested copy, so the work is editing rather than starting from nothing.

Do I need a domain name?

No. You get www.igwebsites.com/yourname free, and that is a real address you can put in your bio immediately. A custom domain is available on Pro+ if you want one later.

Can I make an IG website on my phone?

Yes, and that is what it is designed for. It runs in your phone's browser, so there is nothing to install.

Is it free to make an IG website?

Yes. The free plan does not expire and does not need a card.
